The best days and times to go thrifting

Stock arrives after weekend donations, markdowns change on fixed weekdays, and the crowds come Saturday afternoon. Put those together and the calendar picks itself.

When the floor is freshest

Donations pile up on weekends; sorting, tagging and racking happen over the following days. In most stores the first fresh rack of the week appears Monday or Tuesday, which is why early-week mornings have the reputation among regulars. Big holiday cleanouts — after New Year, spring, and the end of summer — put more on the floor than any weekday pattern.

When prices drop

Markdowns are tied to the tag-color rotation, which changes on a set weekday that differs by chain and region. The first day of a new sale color has the best combination of price and selection; by the last day, what is left is what nobody wanted. Holiday-weekend storewide sales are the exception, when everything is discounted and the lines say so.

When to avoid

Saturday afternoons and the first days after payday are the busiest; the aisles are crowded and the good pieces are gone by noon. If a weekend is the only option, opening time on Saturday still beats mid-afternoon.
